The New Reality of Budget Bourbon
| Don't like ads? | No ads |
A couple years ago I made a Top 10 list of the best bottles available for under $30. Unfortunately, inflation has caused many retailers to raise their prices above the $30 mark to around $35 these days, and it’s getting harder to find a great bourbons under $35 anymore. So I made the decision to change my price parameters to reflect the reality we’re in now. $35 is the new $30.
I’m going to be straightforward with you, bourbons under $35 aren’t what they used to be. I think that by 2018, every truly good sub-$35 bottle either became allocated (Henry McKenna BiB, Eagle Rare) or had its price increased. Worse still, even if the producer left the price alone, they often changed the specs so that it wasn’t as desirable anymore (Very Old Barton BiB lost its age statement for instance).
In 2025 we’re witnessing a kind of rebirth of affordable bottles with specs that say “buy me!”. It’s just unfortunate that producers don’t have any undercover bangers anymore. But after tasting through enough of these, here are the ones that I think are well worth your time if you love bourbon, but are on a budget.
Top 9 Best Bourbons Under $35 (2025 Edition)
9. Early Times Bottled in Bond

Early Times Bottled in Bond continues to be one of the most reliable value bourbons on the market — and the fact that it still comes in a full liter bottle makes it an even stronger budget pick. It delivers a nicely rounded profile with caramel, fruit sweetness, vanilla, and a touch of charred oak. The palate strikes a great balance between sweetness and spice, with mellow cinnamon and barrel notes carrying into a warm finish. For an inexpensive bottled-in-bond release, it offers impressive drinkability and more flavor than expected at this price.
Why it made the cut: One of the best “value per ounce” BiB bourbons available, and one of the few liter bottles under $35.

8. Knob Creek 9 Year Small Batch (Best Aged Bourbon Under $35)

Knob Creek 9 Year stands out in this price range because it delivers true maturity — something rare for a sub-$35 bourbon in 2025. The return of the 9-year age statement brought back the rich caramel, roasted nut, vanilla, and seasoned oak notes that made it a classic in the first place. It sips with a depth and structure that most budget bourbons don’t come close to matching. At 100 proof, it also holds up beautifully in cocktails while remaining flavorful enough to sip neat.
Why it made the cut: A true 9-year age statement at this price is almost unheard of today — and it brings the flavor to match.

Bottled at 125 proof, it brings explosive caramel sweetness, cinnamon spice, toasted oak, and a surprising amount of depth for its price point. I enjoyed your review. I’ve been a Wild Turkey 101 man since before it lost the 8 year old label. I kept it for everyday because of its versatility & I enjoy the finish where you get a little bite in the back. Based on your review I’ll definitely take a look at picking up a few to test in mingled Cairn.

Evan Williams single barrel vintage 86 proof is an excellent value bourbon. It was so popular that Evan Williams stop shipping it outside of Kentucky for two years. It is now available in limited states. I have an extensive bourbon bar. I have used it in bourbon cocktails for years. It is even excellent sipping with a large ice cube. It is better than many $70 bottles in my bar. I think you may have missed this one on this list. Meanwhile you may want to recommend it. In current times with quickly escalating bourbon prices, this bourbon iris and has been an excellent valve.
