Kilkerran 16 Year Old Whisky Review

Distilled & Bottled by Kilkerran (Mitchell’s Glengyle)

Region: Campbeltown

Type: Single Malt

ABV: 46%

Age: 16 yr

Color: Gold

This 16 year old age stated Kilkerran was first released in late 2020 and is the newest edition to their core range. It was matured in a mix of 96% ex-bourbon & 4% Marsala Wine casks. As is the case with all Kilkerran releases, it is bottled with neither chill filtration or added coloring.

Tasting Notes

Kilkerran_16-Main

Nose: A fruit explosion of stone fruits and cooked apple with cinnamon. Intense vanilla is followed by some spice like anise. I also find the signature Kilkerran malt notes of fuel vapor & earthiness.

Palate: A nice, medium weight viscosity that is a touch oily and very pleasant. The fruit notes transition to more tropical varieties of grapefruit, green banana and lemon. There’s also a good amount of brine that is noticeable.

Finish: The finish shifts toward savory and herbal notes. There are lingering notes of oak and baking spice that come through as does smoked bacon and some campfire flavors. Fruit notes like grapefruit and lemon are faint but noticeable.

Rating: 8/10

Conclusion: This is a step up from the already impressive 12 year old bottling and a great edition to Kilkerran’s core lineup. The extra years barely burnish the feisty nature of Kilkerran’s spirit while providing some added depth and complexity to the whisky. This captures all of the things that I liked about the 12 year release and puts a slightly different spin on it. This is an excellent malt!
