The Bourbon Brown Book – 2025 Edition

The Bourbon Brown Book – 2025 Edition

2025 Price Guide for Rare & Allocated Bourbon and Rye Whiskey

Our annual Brown Book is designed to inform and educate enthusiasts on the retail and secondary prices of today’s most allocated bottles.  We do not condone the buying and selling of bottles on secondary markets because of the legal grey area they represent, but we also know that it’s something that is firmly embedded into the culture.  Whenever scarcity takes over, people with access to these rare bottles tend to come up with a value roughly akin to scarcity and their time to acquire.  It’s a tale as old as time.

Trends we witnessed across the Bourbon Secondary Market in 2024

Similar to last year’s guide, I noted how the secondary market is in a steady downward slump. Many enthusiasts speculate that a glut appears to be coming, but I’m not so sure. I think that producers will do one of two things to preserve the name of their flagship labels. They will:

  • Limit case numbers for their allocated releases to create continued scarcity or
  • Continue to release new products made from the same kinds of whiskies by bottling age statements or different proofs

An example of the first one would be 13th Colony and their Double Oaked Bourbon. They know it’s a cash cow for them now, but they continue to limit bottle counts to roughly 3,000. Old Forester is floundering at their opportunity to keep President’s Choice and King of Kentucky scarce because they keep upping the bottle counts with each consecutive year. This is seeing a huge drop in its secondary value.

Jim Beam and Wild Turkey are embracing the second trend by introducing a wide range of new products at different ages and proofs. Wild Turkey noticed that Russell’s Reserve 13 Year was slowing down in demand and subsequently released Russell’s Reserve 15. Jim Beam released Old Grand Dad with a 16 Year Old Age Statement and continues to increase the age statements for many other brands across the board.

Early Adopters Are Still Setting Stupid Prices

I try to point this out every year, but if there is a new release that comes out, it is worth your time to hold off buying it for the first 2 to 3 months.  Trust me, if you can find a bottle from the 1940’s, 50’s or 60’s in the year 2024, you’ll be able to find a bottle released from the last 12 months at some point on the secondary market. Don’t buy a bottle on the secondary if it recently came out.

If I could point to any example for why you shouldn’t buy a bottle when it first comes out, I would tell you to check the prices of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection from last year to this year. Thomas H. Handy has absolutely plummeted over those 12 months and now you can buy a bottle for basically the cost of one before the pandemic ($400 at the end of 2019 and $450 now). Weller 12 and Elmer T. Lee have similarly fallen off a cliff. This isn’t entirely by coincidence either. Buffalo Trace is dumping huge volumes of their lower-tier allocated bottles onto the market. Flippers are losing their minds.

Brands to Avoid on the Secondary Market

There are certain brands that have cult-like followings. And when I say “cult-like,” I am serious. Think about Scientology and how it operates like a pyramid scheme. I’ll give you an example: Rare Character. The guys that worship this producer tend to mark up the releases and sell them within these closed groups. Valuations are set by the guys with the most access to these bottles. You’re not “cool” enough to fit in unless you start buying a ton of them. Even if you do, that doesn’t make you the alpha of the group, you’re just a sucker with less money in your pocket. It’s insane.

A lot of brands have sub-groups that work like this. So I’m going to tell you which ones to avoid. This list looks similar to last years:

  • Rare Character
  • Old Carter
  • Kentucky Owl
  • 2XO
  • Preservation Distillery (Rare Perfection and Olde St. Nick)
  • Blue Run
  • Down Home
  • Good Times
  • Barrell Bourbon (Gold and Gray Label Releases)
  • World Whiskey Society
  • Binder’s Stash
  • NULU
  • Four Gate
  • Short Barrel
  • Willett
  • Mayor Pingree
  • J. Mattingly

What do we mean by Tiers?

After the bottle name, we have assigned a corresponding tier to each bottle. This is what they mean:

T1 = Tier 1 bottles

  • The most highly coveted and hardest to find bottles. Expect these bottles to gain in value in the years to come

T2 = Tier 2 bottles

  • These bottles are also highly coveted, but slightly easier to obtain. There is still a good chance their value will raise in the years to come

T3 = Tier 3 bottles

  • Although allocated, they can be found if you’re looking hard enough. Typically, there are multiple releases throughout the year or if there is just one release, it has a very high bottle count and is released nationwide.

Prices and Trends

The Retail Price is the price that stores, on average, are pricing their bottles at. Prices will vary shelf by shelf, but if you see a price that is substantially higher than the price we’ve listed as the retail price, that means that the store is trying to gain more profit from you, usually because they keep track of the secondary market too.

The Secondary Price was based on current bottle valuations as of November 2024. These prices may rise or fall over the next 12 months, but remain somewhat dormant for at least the next 6 months as releases begin to slow down.

Trending is based on year-over-year price fluctuations. For a brand-new release there is usually no trend to report. However, some new releases have violent fluctuations a month or two after they first appear on the secondary market. In that case, I will note them accordingly.
